10 Video Games With Unimaginably Complicated Lore

9. Bastion

2B Nier
Supergiant Games

At first look, Bastion's narration seems a lot more style over substance. If you roll off the playable area, the narrator will joke that you fell to your death then say he's just kidding as you pop back into the world. But, as time goes on, the narration begins to describe a land much darker than it first seems.

Grizzled narrator Rucks' mournful voice slowly introduces you not just to the world, but to how the people in it felt about their situation. We learn about factions like the Caelondian Breakers with their love of Dreadrum and impressive bowmanship, the Brushers who explored new territories with nothing but their pikes, and the constantly invading Ura who are the villains to the heroic Caelondians.

Except, when we encounter the Windbag enemies, we learn that the Gasfella variant were used for construction alongside those who took a shift on the Rippling Walls, while the Scumbag evolution is used to dispose of Caelondia's garbage. Young Windbags are called Squirts, which are distilled into Squirt Cider for workers on the walls.

Caelondia seemingly kept a race of slaves and got drunk on their fermented young. And they were the good guys.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
