10 Video Games With Unimaginably Complicated Lore

2. Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning

When 38 Studios came up with the idea for Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning, they had some lofty ideas: an RPG that would be as expansive as The Elder Scrolls series, with the cartoonish presentation of the Fable games, and a combat system that would be fun for every level of player. That the fledgling studio pulled it all off is nothing short of a gaming miracle.

The world of Amalur was not just fully fleshed out, but felt alive to most players, with a vast history that seemed barely touched upon. And that's because there was indeed a vast history that was barely touched upon in Reckoning. The Kingdoms Of Amalur series, had it continued, would have eventually led into the (at that time) in-development MMO Copernicus. It was this game that 38 Studios originally hired esteemed fantasy author R.A. Salvatore to develop a world for. With Salvatore at the helm, the team created 4,000 years of bullet-point history with expansions to the surrounding mythology.

In 2018, THQ Nordic picked up the rights to Kingdoms Of Amalur, so here's hoping another visit to that wonderfully detailed world is on the cards of fate for next generation consoles.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
