Final Fantasy VII is the crown jewel in the legendary franchise, considered to be the one game in the series that even non-fans adore - yet it doesn't really deserve its position in history.

The franchise is a pretty impenetrable series to just pick up, and its repetitive and frustrating turn-based gameplay often causes more harm than good when it comes to its mass appeal. This is especially relevant to VII, which has a weak combat system when compared to some of the follow-ups to this "seminal" title.

So while the narrative and world design is particularly strong, I'm not entirely sure why the seventh main entry in the series has gained such a mythical status over some of its equally impressive - and in many ways even better - sequels.

But once again it's probably because VII's reputation has gown larger than the game ever was, allowing the title to take a place in pop culture history as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. And while it's definitely a strong entry in the series overall, there's a good chance that you only like Final Fantasy VII because you've been told how much of a masterpiece it is
