10 Video Games You Regretted Pre-Ordering
6. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition
There’s only one thing more infuriating than getting a worse game than you thought you paid for, and that’s getting a worse version of a game you already own.
Disguised as the remaster to end all remasters, in 2021 Rockstar released a compilation of the ‘3D Era’ Grand Theft Auto games that turned out to be three piles of hot garbage dressed up in a hat and a trench coat.
Unfortunately, this ploy actually managed to fool a significant portion of fans, having sold in excess of 10 million copies by February 2022 and enticed many with a $10 off pre-order bonus for the Rockstar Games store.
Alas, the launch was positively bursting with commercial and technical errors — including the game releasing more than 24 hours early in some territories and subsequently being removed from the Playstation store, and the Rockstar Games Launcher being down for 28+ hours, which rendered the game un-buyable on Windows and unplayable for even longer.
Players were enraged to encounter the poor quality of the remaster once they finally got into the game, with updated character models arguably looking far worse, and many features of the originals completely missing alongside the performance issues.
As a result, the game was subject to review bombing and poor press reception despite the assurance that the game would be improved through updates. To make matters even worse, the original versions of the three games were pulled from digital storefronts prior to release, so anyone who didn’t already own the preferable experience no longer could!
Rockstar may as well have stolen gamers' £60 outright and spat in their hot coffee. Not impressed.
