7. Evolve

Cyberpunk 2077
Turtle Rock

A game which exemplifies the potential woes of all asymmetric multiplayers, Evolve was critically and commercially well received at first, even winning several awards for its innovative gameplay structure and space-age horror.

The concept a a deliberately unbalanced multiplayer composition was relatively new at the time of development, and demos showcased at conventions showed the very best parts of the game, building hype amongst fans.

Then things went downhill. One of the few games on this list to not be particularly plagued with bugs, Evolve was instead missing the foray of content that had been expected. Many found that not only the team composition, but also the fun of the game was lopsided, and with the vast majority of people only wanting to play the alien monster and not the four humans battling it, player numbers dwindled.

Further controversy followed surrounding the game’s DLC, as while the developers had promoted their support of future DLC as a selling point for the game, it turned out much of the DLC was not included in the separately-purchasable Season Pass.

While all map additions were free, many players felt that paid content was being deliberately withheld to increase revenue instead of being included in the Pass or base game.

While Evolve did still see success and maintained a dedicated player base for some time, it failed to live up to expectations over all, and the game’s servers have since been shut down in 2018, rendering the game no longer playable.
