It doesn't take a genius to figure out what Tecmo was thinking when they greenlit an all-female Dead or Alive spin-off centered around beach volleyball.

It was conceived as a cynical attempt to part over-sexed young men from their cash in exchange for the ability to ogle unrealistically voluptuous young women in tiny swimsuits.

Much of the pre-release marketing was focused on the game's cartoonish breast jiggle physics, confirming above all else that this wasn't a game you'd want your mother or a prospective romantic interest to walk in on you playing.

And yet, underneath its undeniably trashy and horny veneer, 2003's Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is actually a surprisingly well-crafted and entertaining volleyball game.

Granted, the game market isn't exactly flooded with volleyball titles as it is, but this was genuinely a blast to play in pure mechanical terms - even if its deference for bikini cheesecake also made it a low-key delight.
