The Wii U is by no means an ugly machine - well, the base unit isn’t at least.

That’s more than we can say about the system’s controller, a great chunk of plastic that looks more like a slab than a tablet, even by 2012 standards alongside the bulkier incarnations of the iPad.

Its bundled peripheral cost the Wii U serious points in the sex appeal stakes, but the Switch suffers no such image problems.

This is sleek offering with a hint of cutting-edge about it. The Joy-Con controllers are pleasingly pint-sized and slot into place with all the satisfaction of a Lego-like click.

Okay, so the dark grey colour scheme isn’t the easiest on the eye, but Nintendo’s games are bright and vibrant enough to compensate for that, and the practical docking station is a more elegant solution than a mess of wires.
