10 Ways Nintendo Were Almost COMPLETELY Different
7. Super Mario All-Stars Was Created By Accident
Many iconic video games were created unintentionally. Grand Theft Auto owes its existence to a glitch. Tekken was solely devised to test new software. Metal Gear's emphasis on stealth only came to be due to the limitations of the system. Bizarrely, Super Mario All-Stars was also created by accident.
When the developers for the Super Nintendo were working on the game that would become Super Mario World, they used the same design as Super Mario Bros. 3 and then tweaked them to have modern graphics.
Over time, they thought it would be a good idea to release a 16-bit version of Super Mario Bros. 3 on the console. Since the game’s graphics are similar to Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and the unreleased Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, the company released all of these games as Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES. It worked out since All-Stars became the second-most successful game on the system (just behind Super Mario World).
This was a big deal for the gaming industry as it inspired other companies to remake older games with improved graphics - a practice that's still popular to this day.
