10 Ways Spyro: Reignited Is Better (And Worse) Than Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy

3. Better: Cutscenes & Interaction

Spyro Crash
Activision

Crash’s ‘WHOA!’ is iconic, but other than that he doesn’t really say much. The first game has a vague story; get to the end and save your girlfriend. But after that, Crash’s second and third game had the vaguest of stories cobbled on. Collect crystals and gems because... um... evilness.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing; the simplicity is part of the charm. ‘Save the girl’ worked well enough for Mario too. But when compared to Spyro, it’s a distant second. Bosses like Metalhead, Gulp and Spike may lack personality even when compared to their similarly storyless Crash counterparts. But the levels are where it really stands alone.

Spyro’s cutscenes might be cheesy, but that’s part of the appeal. Plus, all three games have a clear tangible storyline. And within each level, you feel like you’re in a Pixar movie. While Crash just attacks everyone he comes across, Spyro chats to the villagers there.

In the second and third game, each level contains a mini narrative, with different stories and characters to converse with. It truly feels like you’re a part of the world, and part of a bigger story than simply Spyro’s objectives.
