10 Ways The Steam Box Can Win The Console War

8. Steam OS Enhances Gaming Performances

Steam-Os By the name alone, one can guess that Valve's Steam OS is an operating system built around the Steam service. But that's not all there is to it. Besides the fact that it's also being built as an open source OS (based on Linux) for living room machines -- especially the Steam Box -- Valve's Steam OS will be packing an array of innovative features for that space. Valve claims that through Steam OS, the company has "achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing." As imaginative as that sounds, it also quite interesting considering the possibility that an OS can significantly boost the performance of the games running on it. But that's not all. Valve also claims that they are targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level." In addition, the company claims they already have hundreds of games running smoothly on the OS, with more coming next year. The only catch is these games are only Open GL compatible due to its Linux architecture. But if all goes well, Steam OS could indeed be a better alternative for multiplatform titles.
