10 Ways You're Worse At Video Games Than You Think
4. Button Placement
Have you ever stopped to actually think about how much thought goes into designing a video game controller? Aside from the overall comfort and feel of a handheld controller, a whole lot of thought goes into choosing where buttons are placed, and what role each of them have to play in-game.
For example, Nintendo allegedly went through up to thirty different prototypes when designing the wheel that came bundled in Mario Kart Wii. A wheel. It's a bit of a sensationalised example for sure, but it does do a good job in raising the point that there's a lot of facets that come into play for companies when designing their controllers.
Whilst such a move would draw huge criticism from the community and most likely impact sales, imagine if one of your favourite video game developers suddenly decided to switch the 'Jump' button from 'X' to 'O' on a PlayStation controller. It would force so many gamers to consciously reconsider reflexes that have become second nature over the years, and make a game that much harder to master.
So, next time you're speed-running through one of your favourite games, just take a moment to thank the consideration developers have for ease and comfort when it comes to the controls.
