10 Weirdest Unlockable Video Game Characters You Have To Get RIGHT NOW
2. Green Goblin - Spider-Man: The Movie
Coinciding with the release of its film counterpart, Spider-Man: The Movie was a linear, action-adventure title released in 2002 for the GameCube, Xbox, and PS2.
Though movie tie-ins can be hit-and-miss, this action-adventure game was praised for its presentation, combat, and web mechanics. It had Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe reprising their roles as Peter Parker and Norman Osborn respectively, which was a delight for fans. (Also, having Bruce Campbell as the tutorial narrator was a stroke of genius.) Spider-Man: The Movie also contained secret outfits - the coolest of all being Alex Ross' original concept for the movie's Spidey suit.
However, the most desirable unlockable was the Green Goblin costume, allowing you to select the iconic supervillain. But instead of taking control of the traditional Goblin, you play as Harry Osborn, who's hell-bent on avenging his father.
Rather than being a straightforward skin-swap of Spidey, you gain access to new mechanics, weapons, dialogue, cutscenes, and most importantly, the Goblin Glider, in what essentially functions as a playable epilogue. Even though webbing around the city is amazing, blasting enemies while zipping about in Gobby's hovercraft is more satisfying.
As a bonus, Harry is portrayed by Josh Keaton, who went on to voice Peter Parker in the animated series, The Spectacular Spider-Man.
The developers put so much effort into this unlockable, it feels like you're taking part in a whole new campaign mode while playing as Harry Osborn. While it very much fits in with the overall theme of the game, what makes it weird is that so much time and effort was put into something that was never really advertised. For the vast majority of people who played Spider-Man: The Movie, chances are they missed out on this killer feature.
