10 Well-Reviewed Video Games We TURNED ON After Launch
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain released to rave reviews, rocking a staggering 93 Metascore, suggesting it to be one of the best entries in Hideo Kojima's legendary stealth-action franchise.
And while the sequel's core gameplay continues to be revered to this very day, it's safe to say that the overall experience quickly lost its shine once players took full stock of its many shortcomings.
The biggest issues? The lack of cinematic storytelling compared to prior entries, the generic, repetitive missions, generally underwhelming boss fights, dubious late-game plot twist, and most egregiously of all, the fact that it was effectively released unfinished.
In the early days of playing The Phantom Pain, it was easy to be enamoured by its best-of-class gameplay, which presented players with an enormous array of options to complete a given sortie.
But once the honeymoon period ended, it was tough to deny that the game was clearly compromised by being rushed out the door by Konami before Kojima was ready to present it to the world.
And today, almost a decade later, the consensus seems to be that Metal Gear Solid V touts fantastic gameplay while almost everything else is a colossal letdown. As Kojima's final Metal Gear game, that really stings.
