8. Platforming - DOOM Eternal

Doom Eternal
id Software

This can be discussed on a player-by-player basis but the platforming in 2020's DOOM Eternal isn't good.

Consisting of infinite egregious mechanics that could have worked had it not been for id Software's over-dependence on them, they're tricky to grasp for those unused to platforming, resulting in many players quickly taking to online forums to voice their discontent with the these aspects. SectorStar, writing in a Gamefaqs forum, stated that they "bought a shooter game to shoot things, not jump and swing off things".

While this may read as a scathing remark, given how evidently tiringly id Software worked to incorporate platforming while maintaining DOOM's established skin as an FPS, Eternal is significantly more entertaining when played as a shooter.

These mechanics only grow in aggravation as the game progresses, too. Even from the second level, platforming is a leading theme, requiring players to double jump and swing from monkey bars like they're 8-years-old again in the school playground.

DOOM Eternal is fundamentally a solid game, comparatively trouncing its predecessors in most departments - particularly as it pertains to its level design, visuals, and soundtrack - but these superfluous platforming aspects greatly hold it back from being a wholly well-rounded title.
