6. Half-Life: Episode Two
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C70e4QSRUs Valve have sort of earned a reputation for some lacklustre endings in the Half-Life franchise, but this one takes the cake and again, like Shenmue 2, is worse because we have no idea when, if ever, it is going to be followed up on. Half-Life: Episode Two ends with the death of Eli, as his daughter, Alyx, cradles his corpse, a pretty epic cliff-hanger and an exclamation point, given how likeable and important Eli was in the series. That was five years ago, and we're still left clueless as to when Episode Three might come out, or whether Valve might just proceed with Half-Life 3, which presumably would pick up from this narrative thread. The abrupt ending aside, it's a little bit underwhelming to close the game without a boss-fight or something for us to linger on; Eli dies, and the game is over barely a minute later. Given how long we've had to wait, that's not a lot to meditate on.
