10 Worst Video Game Heroes Of All Time
4. Dante (DmC)
Worst Offence: He’s a juvenile wannabe caught in the throes of a tantrum.
What is it with Capcom taking a beloved hero and then ruining everything fans love about them? That’s exactly what they did in the Devil May Cry reboot, turning the generally awesome Dante into a whiney spoilt brat who tosses out moody one-liners as if his shallow life depends on it. Because that’s what ‘cool’ is to middle-aged executives.
If you stare very intently, you can make out the ghost of a Final Fantasy ‘too-hip-to-live’ vibe. A man designed to appeal to younger gamers (seriously, that’s why Capcom has him redesigned). Only here, it completely fails since that’s not who Dante is – or was. Dante was already a recognisable character, if only for his shock of white hair.
The reboot even does away with that. What once was a tough, skilled swordsman in the anime mould, becomes the simpering, inexperienced try-hard teenager DmC presents.
It’s telling that we’ve not seen this alternate-universe Dante since DmC was released in 2013. We can only hope that record remains unbroken.
