10 Worst Video Game Marketing Campaigns Ever
3. Goat Of War - God Of War II
The original God of War was an instant hit due to its inventive action, epic boss battles, and expansive lore. Of course, it was the over-the-top bloodshed that allowed GoW to secure its legacy in the gaming world.
In order to promote the sequel, Sony held an Athenian-themed media event, which featured scantily clad women and an actor dressed as the series' protagonist, Kratos.
Unfortunately, everything was overshadowed by the party's centrepiece - a dead goat. Although this farm animal was supposed to represent a sacrifice to the Greek gods, many thought it was in poor taste.
But when the Daily Mail learned of the event, Sony's little misfire became the most controversial gaming story of the year. The British newspaper heavily embellished details of the get-together, erroneously stating the goat was freshly decapitated, and attendees were expected to pull out the creature's organs.
Due to inaccurate stories like this, anti-video gamer campaigner, Keith Vaz, demanded consumers to boycott Sony products.
Sony eventually made a statement to confirm the God of War II event was nowhere near as depraved as initially reported. However, they owned up, saying the inclusion of a deceased goat was still "in poor taste".
