After seeing the success of Super Mario 64, many 2D platformers decided to make the jump to 3D. Although many platformers struggled with the graphical conversion, few titles handled the transition worse than Earthworm Jim.

Earthworm Jim 3D had such a rocky production, VIS Interactive were certain it would be cancelled. In hindsight, it really should've been. The creators struggled with the graphics throughout development, which resulted in serious issues with the frame-rate and animation. As the problems continued to pile up, the developers were pressurised to cut a lot of features that appeared in early promotions, which infuriated players.

Earthworm Jim 3D may have the zany humour that fans had come to expect, but that didn't make up for this threequel's appalling gameplay. The camera is so inconsistent, you'd swear one of Jim's enemies was swinging it around deliberately to get you killed. The levels are so barren and charmless, you could easily mistake the game as a work-in-progress rather than a finished product.

After playing Earthworm Jim 3D for a couple of minutes, you'll understand why the franchise has been in limbo for decades.
