4. WWE Crush Hour
WWE Crush Hour was a completely different style of game from the normal wrestling fare. Instead of the traditional in-ring wrestling simulator, Crush Hour was a vehicular combat game in the style of Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8 in which you took control of WWE themed cars and destroyed opponents. As the story goes, the all-powerful Vince McMahon has taken control of all the TV networks and is faced with filling up the timeslots with all the WWE related content he can put together. Strangely, the game opens on a fictional WWE Network, showing odd shows ranging from what looks like a Kane cooking show to a Divas version of Shipwrecked. We can only hope the actual WWE Network doesn't stoop to such ridiculous levels. His latest creation, "Crush Hour" is a destruction derby show pitting his WWE Superstars against each other in an attempt to destroy each other. That can't be good for business. Each vehicle in the game is customized to match the WWE Superstar driving and there are over 30 Stars represented in all. Using the same ideas that wrestling had the cars have primary weapons, "foreign objects," and "Special Moves." Even the arenas themselves are based on WWE concepts like Hell in a Cell, Gauntlet and Royal Rumble. The cars even made WWE style entrances to the combat arena. An interesting premise yes, but that's where the fun ends, as the game is not very good at all. It boils down to a basic Destruction Derby style car game with a lick of WWE paint on top. The power ups were uninspired and the driving was as bland as could be. Challenges generally didn't get more in depth than destroying as many cars as possible. It was a brave move to try out an entirely new genre but the only way it would've been worthwhile is if it had been better than the games that already dominated that genre. Unfortunately for WWE Crush Hour, it wasn't even on a par with the existing titles meaning it alienated WWE fans who just wanted a wrestling game and vehicle combat fans who would rather just stick with the proven games in their genre. WWE Crush Hour was a disappointing attempt at a game that we hopefully won't have to watch for real when Vince and the WWE Network get out of control.
