Fallout 4 Review One of the areas in which Fallout 4 really improved upon its predecessors was in terms of building atmosphere, and creating surprising cinematic moments when you least expect them. Take this completely out-of-the-blue boss encounter in the centre of Boston. You're wandering through the city streets at dusk, with an unhealthy haze hanging over the urban ruins, accompanied by some of that deliciously creepy ambient music that seems to kick in specifically during the game's eery moments. You stumble upon a barren park square near the Boston common, in the middle of which there's a pond with what appears to be a giant swan in the middle. You approach this odd but innocuous-looking thing, and suddenly it starts rising out of the water, eventually towering over you and revealing itself as a legendary super mutant behemoth called - appropriately - Swan, who wields what appears to be a warhammer in one arm and a giant blade in the other (why he has a giant swan wing for a shoulderpad remains a mystery). It's one of the great shock moments in a game that, being a Bethesda RPG, you wouldn't expect to have so many of. The fight itself is pretty standard shoot-'til-it-drops fare, but the way it hits you out of nowhere is phenomenal.
