It's easy to forget amongst all the hubbub surrounding Sony's leaked 'PS4.5', that the notion of an incremental, mid-cycle console release actually came from Microsoft - or more specifically, Phil Spencer.

Talking to Polygon, Spencer let the cat out the bag by mentioning Microsoft would "come out with new hardware capability", leading to most recently, a report from The Verge, alluding to the idea of "two Xbox One models" being tested as we speak. A very polarising prospect indeed.

It fits that such a monumental paradigm shift for the industry (from decade-long hardware cycles to an incremental model indicative of the mobile market) would be something agreed on behind closed doors between the two console giants, but then again, Microsoft have all the power to get on stage and trounce Sony instead.

Remember E3 2013, when Sony pooped all over Microsoft's new game-trading idea? Well, if the latter really want to 'get them back' and respond to the unanimous hatred being spewed about the new PS4 model, they could get up on stage, stand tall and say "Unlike some other companies, we actually respect your initial purchase of the machine, and look forward to delivering content that everybody can enjoy."

Time will tell.
