11 Greatest RPGs Of The 2000s

2. Mass Effect

The beginning of the series that would grow in popularity to become one of the most loved RPG franchises of all time began life on the Xbox 360, before expanding to every game platform possible. It was the next-gen evolution of the system that BioWare started with Knights of the Old Republic, with a focus on dialogue, story and squad-based combat. The plot was phenomenal, the characters were the most believable that had yet existed in a game, and the romance scenes were, well, cringeworthy, but kudos to the devs for 'going there' and effectively kickstarting the idea of in-game relationships being taken seriously. Mass Effect told a story like no game before it, not just through well-written plot but by combining that with a plethora of lore and character backstories to make it the ultimate video-game sci-fi tale. It was a monumental game that eventually passed the torch onto its sequels and The Witcher 3 as a high watermark of video game storytelling.
