Tomb Raider broke the mould in more ways than one.

First off, it gave us one of gaming's first (and most successful) female protagonists. It also laughed at the notion that platforming games should be colourful, childish affairs, instead opting to blend platforming with puzzles and a healthy dose of gunplay for good measure.

The result was wildly successful that was highly praised for its blending of multiple gameplay elements and (at the time, at least) groundbreaking graphics.

Playing it back today is an interesting experience.

Tomb Raider is old enough now that its controls feel awkward and clunky, and its graphics are a throwback to a time when polygonal humans were deemed realistic.

The worst part of all, though, is the way that Ms. Croft herself was treated in the game's promotional material. Objectified and made out to be some sort of sex symbol, video game's first real leading lady deserved so much better than the late '90s gave her.

Especially when it was in such stark contrast to the way she was portrayed in the game itself - giant triangular chest notwithstanding.
