8. Dark Souls Bonfire - Battlefield 1 (2016)

It wouldn't be World War I without wide-open fields in the middle of nowhere, now would it? And with wide-open fields comes a vast rural terrain for the developers to hide quirky little secrets in. Amazing, then, that they decided instead to go with the area around the outside you're not supposed to be in...

This Battlefield 1 easter egg is located just outside of the playable area (you'll know you're there when the screen turns a murky sepia colour), off the main road and amongst a small group of trees. There, you'll find a bonfire with a sword stuck down into it, creating an obvious resemblance to the iconic bonfires of the critically acclaimed series, Dark Souls.

This is certainly not the first game to include a Dark Souls reference, but the juxtaposition of real-world warfare and dark fantasy is especially noteworthy here, not to mention that you really have to go out of your way to find this crafty secret.

The only real shame is that this imitation bonfire doesn't restore all your health and items like the real thing.
