11 Off-Map Video Game Secrets You Won't Believe
9. Serious Sam Helmet - The Talos Principle (2014)
Everyone familiar with the gloriously unsubtle shooter series, Serious Sam, no doubt did a double take in 2014 when the developers at Croteam decided to turn their attention to a transcendent puzzle game with religious and existential themes. Talk about one extreme to the other!
Nevertheless, The Talos Principle is beautifully crafted and features some of the hardest and most impressive environmental puzzles of the generation.
And while the environments in question are truly a joy to behold, they're not without their faults. Faults that can easily be exploited.
In an early puzzle of the sandy Area B, the player is able to leave the map in one of two ways. The first involves hopping on top of a force field barrier, while the other requires you to squeeze through a window by placing a box underneath it.
Both ways lead you out into the open desert, and following the wall along will eventually take you to a strange helmet half-buried in the sand.
This is the standard pilot helmet from Serious Sam, the type of reference you just knew Croteam couldn't resist slipping in. Are these games in the same universe, then, or is this simply a funny in-joke for compulsive game breakers? You decide.
