11 Terrifying Abandoned Areas In Video Games That Will Give You The Creeps

10. The Deep Roads – Dragon Age: Origins

Deserted town of Pripyat, Ukraine
Bioware

Dragon Age: Origins was our welcome into the world of Thedas, delivered to us by BioWare back in the days when they were beyond reproach.

It played like any good RPG should, immersing us in the world, making us care about our choices and our companions, and offering hours upon hours of fun, exciting gameplay.

Like any good fantasy setting, the stakes are high, and the aim of the game is to combat the rising Darkspawn threat, a horde of zombie-like creatures that rise from the Deep Roads, the tunnels that run beneath the world.

It all seems to be going well, until the moment you're given the quest to venture into the Deep Roads in search of a lost Dwarf.

What ensues is a seemingly endless labyrinth of passages, dimly lit and crawling with monsters. You pass through tunnels, roads, and abandoned thaigs, places that were clearly inhabited at one point, now overrun with giant spiders, magical monsters or Darkspawn.

The Deep Roads are bad enough, but its the way that they stretch endlessly on, and the countless number of warnings given to you by NPCs before risking the depths that travellers rarely return from the Deep Roads.
