When Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released in 2007, and in short, it was groundbreaking.

With visuals so smooth it felt like a movie made of butter, players really felt as though they were part of the action, which - horrors of war aside - was exciting and exhilarating.

Then came the mission teased in trailers: the journey into the depths of Pripyat known widely as the city that was devastated after the Chernobyl disaster. here your mission is to assassinate a crazed arms dealer.

The two mission arc involves infiltrating the abandoned city, and then attempting to escape with enemy forces relentlessly hunting you. Running through abandoned schools, apartment buildings, and swimming pools brings the reality of the real-life disaster to light for many, and players felt their unease growing as they slogged through areas that were once teeming with life but now left abandoned.

It's a relief when the mission is over, but not just because you've escaped alive, but because you can leave behind that creepy place once and for all.
