Hideo Kojima has earned a reputation for thought-provoking, empathetic video game narratives, emotionally investing the player from the outset. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater approaches its climax, the player learns the true nature of The Boss' actions.

Presented throughout as the primary antagonist and a traitor to the United States, it transpires that The Boss was a key figure in an elaborate plot orchestrated by the US to obtain the Philosopher's Legacy whilst avoiding war with the Soviet Union. In the aftermath of the revelation, after she is killed by Snake Eater, the players are left to contemplate The Boss' fate, as someone who sacrificed their her family, her life and legacy for the benefit of her country.

Whilst this is not necessarily an appropriate motive for everybody, it is poignant that to achieve something great - something for the benefit of others, when you'll receive no accreditation or thanks in the aftermath - sacrifices must be made.

For more video games centred around the theme of self-sacrifice, gamers may like to try Halo Reach or Heavy Rain.
