We thought it'd never happen, but with the help of one unassuming little indie title, Rocket League single-handedly proved the non-Nintendo 'big boy' consoles can also cater to games that put arcade sensibilities front and centre; creating one of the most addictive and well-received games in years. Essentially looking like 'football with cars', its appeal is tenfold of how awesome that sentence sounds, a million times more so when you get behind the wheel. First you'll start off fumbling with the alternate camera modes, but the second you manoeuvre into position, slam the boost button and launch your ride towards the suitably huge ball, its bounce propelling goal-wards as the crowd erupts behind you - you can see why it's far and away the game of the summer. One of those 'little games that could', Psyonix's effort obviously had a bit more budgetary clout than most of the titles on this list, but that doesn't stop its origins as a fantastic indie project shine through. It's easy to forget that the 'indie' label doesn't have to apply to 2D side-scrollers or pixel art creations. Instead it can represent a smaller team with the right drive and passion, creating something that sells itself purely on fun and a seamless user experience across the board.
