12 Best Indie Games Of 2015 (So Far)

9. Not A Hero

Like Hotline Miami, adrenaline-soaked soundtracks and a subtly-detailed pixel art aesthetic? Step forward, Not A Hero, as it's essentially the same thing in terms of immediately-engaging gunplay, except set more of a 2D side-on plane, complimented by a barmy plot featuring a Governmental figure named BunnyLord running for office. As you do. Basically Mr. Lord wants to take a firm stance on crime, and you're the team of people to go out and do so, eradicating one face at a time. Gameplay-wise it does differ far more in the feel of things than Hotline, as unlike that game you'll be taking cover contextually rather than forcing the A.I. to figure out where you are, meaning gun battles tend to go from intense stop n' pop standoffs where you're trading rounds, to deploying the slide attack, closing ground and pulling off up-close Critical Hit finishers - resulting in good ol' fashioned geysers of blood. As was the case with Hotline though, the more confident you become in your abilities, the more you'll start chaining together increasingly high numbers of kills, entering into the same symbiotic, reactionary sense of gameplay flow that's hugely enjoyable. Devolver Digital continue to be one of the best publishers around, shining a light on the likes of Hotline Miami, Luftrausers, Titan Souls and now this - all games with great, solid gameplay, and absolutely outstanding soundtracks.
