12 Best Western-Themed Video Games Ever

8. Wild Arms

Red Dead Redemption
Media Vision

Given a (heh) western release on the PlayStation in 1997, the same year as Final Fantasy VII, Wild Arms is the cool RPG you've probably never heard of - probably because you were too busy (you've guessed it), playing FFVII.

Despite receiving a warm critical reception at the time, Wild Arms still deserves a dusting down and reappraisal because it really is a pillaring entry in the genre. Set in a Western world of sorts - it's called Filgaia - you control a team of Dream Chasers, a rag tag group that, in a familiar trope, start out wanting to hunt down a buck or two but soon get embroiled in a large scale predicament.

The game's 2D visuals are suitably gorgeous, with lovely details on show giving the game its distinct style. Come battle time, Wild Arms' coolest element kicks in, where players are thrust into a 3D fight zone and have to use all the skills they've acquired and built upon to win some of the best turn-based fights you'll ever experience. Get the re-master and relive this unique title.

Plus, Michiko Naruke's soundtrack is the closest thing to Morricone you're going to get in a game.
