12 Best Western-Themed Video Games Ever

9. The Oregon Trail

Red Dead Redemption
Brøderbund

This charming slice of 8-bit wholesomeness started its journey in 1974 (they don't get much older than this one on the list) and continues to wow old and new audiences alike.

The game is an intricately put together adventure where players have to traverse the famed American trail, choosing the route they take, how to keep your settlers safe and, in the game's best widget, the ability to hunt. This entails inputting key words - 'BANG' and 'POW', personal favourites - making sure they are spelled correctly and quickly, all to ensure a successful kill.

For a game that was originally created by a wing of the US education department, The Oregon Trail proves that learning and having immense fun at the same time is a real possibility. Deserved of its place up there with the retro greats.
