Remember the nail-biting ordeal it was to play Super Mario without the option to save your game? Dying in the game felt so much more significant when you knew that once that life counter reached zero, you were on the brink of having to start all over again. The lack of save functionality also meant that you'd often have to leave your NES on for days on end and hope that your mum or sister didn't switch it off while you were at school. While they never found an exploit to stop your mum hitting the NES power button with the hoover, there was a way to negate your fear of Mario's death by getting infinite lives. How to unlock it: Many of Mario's levels have two koopa-troopas walking down the steps leading up to the flagpole at the end. Jump on one of the koopas while it's walking down the steps so it goes into its shell, then jump on top of it so it bounces off the wall and back under Mario's feet. If you time it right, Mario will go into an endless loop of jumping up and down on the shell, building up huge points and earning tons of 1UPs.
