12 Most Difficult Gaming Moments Of 2013

1. The Trial of Archimedes - God of War: Ascension

The most infamously difficult section of any game in 2013 was the Trial of Archimedes in God of War: Ascension, a sequence at the tail end of the game which many reviewers foregrounded as unfairly stacking the odds against the player, in what is surely the most insane difficulty spike of the whole series. I'd heard so much about the Trial of Archimedes before playing it that I was prepared for a whole day of trying to beat it, so surprised I was, then, when I rinsed it on just my second attempt, and much hearty laughter followed. Still, I appreciate that this section gave many gamers the most trouble this year, and so it rightly has to claim the #1 spot on this list. Plus, though I didn't have too much trouble with it, I wouldn't exactly call it easy, either. Kratos has to fight through 3 platforms of increasingly more powerful enemies with no save point or checkpoint in-between, meaning that failure results in going back to the very start. Public outcry was so vocal that in the end, Santa Monica Studio released a patch to nerf the difficulty, with the Trial now rewarding players with green and blue orbs after defeating each wave of enemies. Still, those of us who played the game during the first 2 weeks will know what the real challenge was all about. Which gaming moments gave you the most trouble in 2013? Let us know!
