3. Beyond: Two Souls
It's always nice to see someone try to bring something new to the gaming industry. Developers Quantic Dream often like to take gambles with their games and make something special, but Beyond: Two Souls just ended up being a bit of a disappointment really. A spiritual sequel to Heavy Rain - literally, there's a ghost in it - Beyond is an interactive drama that plays through several scenes with incredibly nice graphics and a pretty good storyline. Sure there's some janky bits here and there just like Heavy Rain, but it was mostly interesting stuff. Unfortunately, having so much drama in a game means its often a very hands-off experience. I mean look at Metal Gear Solid 4 - I loved that game, but I didn't feel like I was playing the damn thing much. Beyond is much like this - it's more about the narrative than anything, and it feels like it suffered because of this. Heavy Rain is the vastly superior game here. Beyond would have been, of course, resoundingly improved by having a section where you walk through a crowded mall shouting 'JASSOOOOOOONNNNNNNN!!!'
