4. Injustice: Gods Among Us
Of course there are plenty other far-deeper fighting games you could recommend, but chances are to any newcomer they'd end up being put off by potentially unforgiving A.I. or - in the case of Mortal Kombat - the horrific levels of gore. Instead Injustice matches up millions of peoples' favourite heroes with a combat system born out of the Mortal Kombat series, throwing in environmental destruction and some spectacularly-enjoyable one-shot special moves to ice off the cake with style. It provides the perfect gateway to other more robust fighting games too, being that Injustice's fighting engine is not as polished as the likes of ageing masters Tekken or Soul Calibur, yet the core ingredients to set you down the path of one-on-one combat are definitely present, with that unique multiplayer aspect of battering your mates fully intact. The genre has slightly died off as of late, however it remains a vested genre in the gaming canon, and one with plenty history in the arcade cabinets of the world. With Injustice receiving a polished-up Ultimate Edition that packs in even more characters and costumes, if any part of you is already a fan of superhero movies or comics, this should be a no-brainer.
