7. Universal Studios Sued Nintendo Over Donkey Kong

Universal Studios, one of the pioneers behind the development of Hollywood and mainstream cinema, once turned its mammoth eye towards Nintendo, specifically the character Donkey Kong.

Universal argued that Donkey Kong was too similar to King Kong, the massively successful movie monster who they claimed was their own. Had Univeral been successful, it's difficult to know what state Nintendo might now be in. They'd have lost the rights to Donkey Kong and would likely have scrapped all things associated with the game, including Jump man (who later become Super Mario) and Pauline (who later became Princess Peach). Thankfully, the Judge presiding over the case (a man named Robert W. Sweet) sided with Nintendo, who proved that King Kong's plot and characters were actually in the public domain.
