That's right, Andrzej Sapkowski did a Charlie Chaplin (who once entered his own lookalike contest and lost), as he wrote the original Witcher tale as a short story intended only for a magazine competition in 1986 - only to come third. By no means a loss, it's a testament to believing in your work that he kept pursuing a publication regardless. Titled 'Wiedźmin' (The Witcher), it was one of many short stories that although out of print in their original form now, are compiled in what is now regarded as the inaugural first literary instalment; The Last Wish.
