12 Most Impactful Games Of The PS4, Xbox One And Nintendo Switch Era

Much like Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V came out prior to the launch of the PS4, Xbox One and Switch, but would go on to have an insane impact during the eighth generation of consoles. GTA V made over $1 billion in sales in its first three days and is currently the second best selling game of all time with over 135 million copies shipped worldwide.

But thanks to the popularity of the game's main multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online, it was able to generate even more money. GTA Online made over $1 billion in just four years and has continued to make big money for Rockstar Games, as even six years after its launch it was confirmed that in 2019 alone the game mode made over $500 million.

As a result of this success, many other developers started including online multiplayer modes in their games to try and replicate GTA Online’s financial success, but so far very few have come anywhere close. However, with new forms of monetisation like games as a service and gacha games creeping into the mainstream, it will be interesting to see how this will affect multiplayer games in the future.
