12 Stupid Gaming Moments That Unwittingly Defined The Last Generation
12. Sony's Giant Enemy Crab At E3 2006
Sony's PS3 presentation at E3 2006 is widely believed to be the worst presentation in the history of the event, because it so negatively impacted the PlayStation brand and gave them very little momentum moving into the console war against Microsoft and Nintendo, such that they only barely managed to catch up with Microsoft in the closing years of the competition. It all started with the demonstration of a game called Genji: Days of the Blade, with lead producer Bill Ritch showing some footage off and claiming that the game drew from real life battles that took place in Ancient Japan. So far, so good, right? Not more than a few seconds after Ritch says this, the demo shows players fighting a "giant enemy crab", as Ritch calls it, to the laughter of gamers the world over, such that it became a popular meme, one that persisted all the way up to Sony's PS4 unveiling at E3 last year. Other choice quotes such as "you attack its weak point for massive damage" only further compounded the embarrassment over a game that was eventually panned and memorable solely for this event. It defined generation seven because it underlined many of the struggles Sony would go through before finally transcending their failures.
