12 Terrible Video Games That Actually Had Great Ideas
2. Daikatana - Time-Travelling And AI Companions
The go-to game to point at and say, 'Wow, they really f**ked that one up, didn't they?' John Romero's baby was "going to make you his b*tch" turned into a disaster, but looking back on it, there were some good ideas amidst the chaos.
First of all, at the time it was virtually unthinkable that a first-person shooter could take place across such an impressive variety of levels. Each episode - futuristic Japan, ancient Greece, Viking Norway and a near-futuristic San Francisco - had a unique set of weapons and enemies to stumble upon, making it at the very least eclectic.
It also featured an AI companion system, where you could give on-the-fly instructions to your two AI buddies.
The problem is, none of it really worked. The companion system was broken, as you'd need to babysit your buddies to make sure they don't get stuck while walking down some stairs, and it looked horrible, even at the time. In the end, the game was crushed by its own hype and ambition, and perhaps would've got a bit more love had there been less build-up to it.
