As briefly mentioned in the intro, Batman wasn't exactly a sought-after property in the 2000s. The big developers wouldn't have wanted to touch it with a barge pole, and most of the superhero games of the time were made by smaller teams or B-players.

In an AMA, head of Rocksteady, Sefton Hill, admitted that, "at the time I think it would be fair to say that no one thought there was a lot of value in a Batman game," so publisher Eidos was essentially expecting the team to pass on the property and make something else.

However, to the team, the chance to work on a Batman game was essentially a dream come true. They knew all about the reputation of the series at that point, but took it on anyway, committed to realising their dream of crafting a gaming experience that did the Dark Knight justice.
