12 Times Movies Got Video Games Wrong
12. Xbox 360 & Gears Of War Weren't Released In 2004 - The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow's Best Picture-winning war classic may be one of the grittiest and most meticulous depictions of the Iraq War yet put to screen, but it also let a daft game-related anachronism slip through the cracks.
Despite the film being set in 2004, a scene depicts a group of soldiers playing Gears of War on an Xbox 360, despite the fact that neither the game nor the console were commercially available at that time.
The Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005, and Gears followed on November 7, 2006.
Does it diminish the brilliance the character study therein? Not remotely, but given the rigorous attention-to-detail elsewhere in the film, it's a baffling mistake to make, and one which sticks out like a sore thumb to well-versed gamers.
Upon the film's Best Picture Oscar win, Xbox's Major Nelson himself even tweeted a tongue-in-cheek comment about the factual inaccuracy.
