12 Unbelievable Indie Games That Deserved Your Attention In 2013
3. Antichamber (PC)
What would happen if you took the basic puzzle-solving ideas found in Portal and turned them in to an even more mind-bending scenario? The answer probably lies with Antichamber, a game where nothing really is as it seems at any point in time. While it would be possible to go in to the inate details of the theories of Euclidean space that are key to the way the game works, that would probably take up the entire article - so let's just talk about just how special they make Antichamber. Whilst both Portal games - as that it really where Antichamber's comparisons truly lie use their environments to create a hostile, somewhat clinical feeling, Antichamber uses its to create the very game itself. One moment you can be looking at something, then the next you can turn around and it can be something completely different. It's almost too simple to say that the game requires you to think outside of the box, given that most of the time you're walking through one in an attempt to make your way through the various puzzles ahead of you. The game balances a fine line between a non-linear setting and the requirement to do certain things in order to progress; many areas can be accessed, but you'll need certain gadgets to move on. By returning to previous areas though, you can quickly see where you might need to go and there's never really a moment where you're left wondering where to go. Instead the game simply challenges you to decide what you have to do in order to solve what's in front of you. As much as the game can be lauded for the challenge it presents, the overall style of the game syncs in perfectly with what's in front of you. It's not going to be for everyone, and certainly it's not as massively memorable as Portal was, but as a good distraction it deserves all the plaudits it has received.
