It was just a matter of time before a Minecraft movie was announced, and though there's every chance for this adaptation of the classic sandbox game to be nothing more than a cynical brand-extension exercise, there's also an unexpected amount of pedigree already attached to it.

It's Always Sunny star Rob McElhenny will co-direct the film with Shawn Levy, while the script is being written by Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs, and Steve Carell is currently rumoured to star. Nice.

If Minecraft goes the self-aware, subversive route similar to, say, The Lego Movie, this could be both a loving tribute to the franchise and also something more. Hopefully it won't be closer to The Angry Birds Movie and settle for witless blandness.
