12 Upcoming Video Game Movies That Could Destroy Tomb Raider
4. Gears Of War
Gears of War is such an inherently cinematic concept for a game that it really should've become a movie already. New Line Cinema purchased the film rights mere months after the first game hit stores in late 2006, but after numerous false starts it's now in some stage of development at Universal Pictures.
Though there's no director attached yet and writer Shane Salerno hasn't exactly got the best track record (he wrote Armageddon, but he's also co-writing the Avatar sequels), it's not like the games have ever been lauded for their tight plotting and deep characterisation, right?
What this movie needs to do is nail the dark, gritty aesthetic and tone of the games more than anything, with a big budget and larger-than-life actors at the helm. The Rock would fit this like a glove, honestly.
We already know the film won't directly adapt any of the games - probably a smart move, really - but tell a new story within this world, giving Salerno and the currently untapped director a little more creative freedom.
If they get it right, this could be a classic meathead B-movie that knows exactly what it is.
