12 Video Game Genres That Desperately Need A Comeback

2. Hacking Simulators

The Genre: This is easily the most niche genre on this list, such that it's largely populated by online and flash games, with the only major commercial hacking sim being 2001's cult classic text-based game Uplink. The goal in these games is either to bring down a website or a corporation via a series of hacking operations which, of course, have been somewhat simplified for the game. Still, it made you feel like a total bada**. What Happened: Like the way that most 1990s movies dealt with computing, these video games fell out of vogue as your average consumer became more acquainted with how computers actually work, and so the superficial complexity of the hacking games became more transparent. Plus, there are only so many players a) interested in hacking and b) who want to play a game with minimal graphics driven by reading and text-based communications. Why It Needs A Comeback: Because Uplink was an awesome game, and if a new hacking sim used the Internet in a myriad of clever ways, it could completely revolutionise the scarcely-recognised genre.
