10. Super Smash Bros.

Considering Super Smash Bros. could've been nothing more than a gimmick, it's bizarre how it became the best-selling fighting series ever.

Although Smash Bros. owes its success to its unique combat system and precise controls, its the branding that turned into it a towering success. The fact you could play as Pikachu, Sonic, Solid Snake, and dozens of other iconic characters helped cement Smash Bros.' legacy.

I mean, could you imagine how Smash would've turned out if it had ZERO recognisable characters?

Weirdly, that was the original idea. Back in 1998, Masahiro Sakurai was working on a four-player co-op fighting game called Kakuto Gemu Ryou (which translates into "Dragon King: The Fighting Game.")

When future Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, had a look at Dragon King, he thought it was too generic. To make it leave a bigger impression, Iwata suggested replacing the combatants with Nintendo characters.

Worried Nintendo overallwouldn't be on board with this idea, Sakurai took Iwata's advice behind the company's back! When he presented his project to the higher-ups, they were surprised to see their mascots beating the crap out of each other.

Fortunately, they loved the presentation, and gave Sakurai permission to incorporate Nintendo characters. With that, Super Smash Bros. was born.
