Interestingly enough, it's the names of Shadow of the Colossus's Colossi that are most important to picking apart their representation, as they tend to correlate with their representation in Greek mythology.

Brilliantly, you can apply the mythology to defeating the creatures themselves.

There's Phaedra; a horse like colossi. Phaedra is the name of the wife of Theseus in Greek mythology, who fell in love with another man and got him murdered through a curse by lying about him. In a great tie, like the colossi's appearance, he was killed by horses.

It seems a tenuous link, but Phaedra's deception is intrinsic to how we interact with the creature as a character. Fooling the monster into looking the other way is part and parcel of being able to murder it - also like a trojan horse.

Another example is the bird colossi Avion, brought down by wounding its wings. If we look to greek mythology again, the bird-man Icarus fell to the ground after flying too close to the sun. If Avion flies too close to the player, you can shoot, climb aboard, and take his wings out from under him.
