6. Containing The Outbreak (MGS V)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxt3n_BTCCY Players spend a lot of their time expanding Mother Base and its staff in MGS V. Recruited soldiers show nothing but unwavering loyalty to the Boss (hurray for brainwashing). They develop weapons for him, complete despatch missions and line up to salute him whenever he returns from the field. They're like puppies, but with guns and a bit of PTSD. MGS V may have been somewhat of a mixed bag overall, but the mission 'Shining Lights, Even In Death' is arguably the game's finest. Big Boss has to explore the quarantine zone set up to contain soldiers that have been infected with a mysterious parasitic virus. Predictably, it all goes pear-shaped and you are forced to identify the infected and shoot them before they can escape and infect the general population. They plead for mercy. Their names pop up on the screen so you know exactly who they are and 'staff died' pops up when you pull the trigger. Emmerich for once grows a backbone and angrily condemns your actions, which at least helps a bit to drown out the soldier's screams of horror when they realise what the Boss, the man they trust more than anyone, is about to do. And then you encounter a group of soldiers hiding in a room. Instead of begging for their lives, they willingly let you decide their fate and just stand there humming the theme to Peace Walker while saluting you with trembling hands. "We live and die by your order, boss". Truly heartbreaking.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
